In a search for adventure or just independent travel without tripping over fellow Americans and bus tours along the way, one need not stray far from home. Although Papua New Guinea or the Bolivian highlands seem to assure success in this regard, there are some wonderful places nearby which offer great opportunities to meet indigenous people and experience a variety of cultures quite distinct from our own.
One of my recent trips with my intrepid co-traveler, my wife Bev, was to the city of Merida in the Yucatan, the southern area of our next door neighbor, Mexico. If you speak Spanish you can follow our trail with no guide. If not, you can find someone at each site to show you around and help you find what you want. Merida is quite another world from the section of Yucatan that hosts most Americans, Cancun and the string of resorts strung below it. Actually it is a good ride from Cancun so you don't have to worry about bumping into over your compatriots along the way. No spring breakers here.
The Merida hotels are quite reasonable. Just choose your level of comfort and make a direct reservation on the net or ask your travel agent to do that for you. We stayed near the center where the colonial buildings still face busy streets and where we could visit the cathedral and other desired sites. Then we rented a car and took day trips to wonderful places throughout the area.

New York is the most populated city in the United States and is the center of commerce and often referred to as the cultural capital of the world. With its rich culture and history, it is indeed one of the top destinations to travel to. And there are a lot of New York attractions that should be included in any tourist's itinerary.
New York City is full of skyscrapers and if you're tired of looking up, you can soar up 70 floors high to see a panoramic view of the city in the Rockefeller Center. The Top of the Rock is the Rockefeller's observation deck that gives an unobstructed view of the whole city. It is also famous for the giant Christmas tree lit up during the holidays. Its skating rink, shops and restaurants will surely give an activity for the whole family.
Another skyscraper to visit is the Empire State Building. It has 102 floors with an observatory on the top most floor which gives a view that spans at least 80 miles. It also gives an amazing view at night while the whole city is lit up. It is open until 2 o'clock in the morning.
Another iconic landmark of New York City is the Statue of Liberty. It is actually a gift to the United States from France which is a symbol of their international friendship. It is located in the Liberty Island and a 20-minute ferry ride will take you to it. It is advised to arrive at least a half an hour early prior to the departure of the ferry to allow time for security inspections.

With a number of airlines now flying to Bangkok, more and more travellers find themselves spending time in Thailand's capital when backpacking Southeast Asia. There is plenty to keep everyone occupied alongside the usual backpacker staple of sampling the bars on the infamous Khaosan Road. In this article, I have listed what I feel to be five excellent places to visit in Bangkok, each rich in culture and very typically Thai.
Chatuchak Weekend Market
Expect large crowds and plenty of bootleg items on sale at Thailand's largest market. With thousands of market stalls covering 35 acres, you can expect to find everything from household goods, handicrafts, food and drink, clothing, footwear to fake football shirts and even live animals! Even if shopping is not your thing, Chatuchak weekend market is well worth a visit just witness this bizarre assembly of stalls.
